Dr. Michael Mayer: The Medicine of Mind, Body, and Spirit

Saybrook University alumnus Michael Mayer, Ph.D., has made it his life’s mission to bridge the gap between conventional medicine and alternative healing modalities. With his unique approach, he has become a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, treating patients as whole individuals rather than merely an amalgam of symptoms.

After completing his undergraduate studies in biology, he pursued a medical degree, becoming a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine. However, he soon realized traditional medical practices often fell short in addressing the complex needs of patients.

Dr. Mayer’s journey toward integrative medicine began when he enrolled in Saybrook University’s graduate program, focusing on mind-body medicine.

“The holistic approach taught at Saybrook completely transformed my understanding of health care,” Dr. Mayer says. “It emphasized the importance of treating the whole person, including their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.” With this new perspective, Dr. Mayer went on to earn a Ph.D. from Saybrook. His dissertation focused on integrative medicine, exploring the interconnectedness between mind, body, and spirit in the healing process.

Today, Dr. Mayer is at the forefront of integrative medicine. He founded the Academy for Integrative Health & Medicine. Through his private practice, he provides individualized care, combining traditional medicine with acupuncture, mindfulness practices, herbal medicine, and other holistic modalities. He also teaches qigong and tai chi workshops, combining these practices to aid patients with Parkinson’s disease.

“Integrative medicine allows me to truly see my patients as whole individuals,” Dr. Mayer shares. “By addressing not only their physical symptoms but also their mental and emotional state, we are able to achieve better overall health and wellness.”

Dr. Mayer’s work extends beyond his private practice. He is a sought-after speaker and educator, conducting workshops and lectures on integrative medicine at universities, conferences, and medical institutions worldwide. One of Dr. Mayer’s most significant contributions to the field of integrative medicine is his groundbreaking book “The Path of a Reluctant Metaphysician,” in which he shares his personal journey and the transformative power of integrative medicine.

In his book, Dr. Mayer writes, “Saybrook opened my eyes to the possibilities of healing beyond what I had been taught in medical school. It gave me the tools to view health from a broader perspective and create a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to patient care.”

As Dr. Mayer continues to push the boundaries of medicine, he remains committed to bridging the gap between conventional and alternative healing approaches. With his unwavering dedication, he is paving the way for a future where health care is truly holistic, addressing not only the physical body but also the mind and spirit.
